Keeping fit on holiday.

Holidays are the best time of the year and we all love a bit of indulgence!  Being in a different environment, on a different schedule, sometimes no access to gyms or other training locations and no equipment, often leads to loss of motivation and a decrease in fitness levels.  Here are some handy tips for keeping fit on holiday:

How to be active while on holiday:

  • Plan day trips or excursions
  • Do sightseeing by foot
  • Take the stairs
  • Make time to play with the kids.
  • Play games in the pool, hire some bikes or go for a walk on the beach to search for seashells
  • Try and plan one physical activity per day
  • Swim a few laps in the pool instead of just drinking cocktails by the bar

Try some new physical activities, something exciting like rock climbing

Make sure you bring suitable sporting attire so there is no excuse NOT to exercise.

Bring equipment that you can easily take on your holiday.

Here are some ideas: skipping rope, thera band or any kind of rubber tubes, TRX which can be used for a complete full body workout, inflatable fit ball, gym mat or extra towel to do floor exercises.

When keeping fit on holiday use outdoor or indoor furniture for your training and be creative in what you can do with them.

Here are some ideas: Chair or bench, stairs, walls for squat holds, poles for TRX or rubber band exercises or the floor and splash out on hard core floor workout.

To make the most of your holiday without spending too much time, train smart and do HITT (High Intensity Interval Training).

HITT is a basic technique of alternating periods of high-intensity exercise with short rest periods for a specific number of sets. These short, intense bursts of exercises can be cardio, strength-based or a mix of both. HITT workouts result in a nine times faster fat loss then a long ‘slow’ cardio workout.

Remember, holidays are not a time to win gold medals, maintaining your fitness level is the key. Doing something is better than doing nothing at all. Aim for at least 50% of your normal routine to be realistic.

Good luck and have an awesome, safe holiday!
